Yacht Registration
Registry System
The British Virgin Islands (ìBVIî) has long operated a cost effective modern yacht registry system designed to facilitate a fast yet secure and world recognized way of registering vessels. In addition to the registration aspect of the system, the Registry permits the registration of mortgages, discharges of mortgages, change/ transfer of ownership and other proprietary interests and services.
The BVI Shipping Registry has been upgraded to Category 1, allowing it to register large cargo vessels of unlimited tonnage and mega yachts of up to 3000 gross tons. The procedure is straightforward and can be accomplished quickly.
Entitlement
Entitlement to register a vessel in the BVI is limited to citizens and/or bodies corporate registered in the BVI. In order to comply with the entitlement requirements, it is usual to establish a corporate ownership structure in the BVI that will own the vessel and permit registration. The BVI is the leading offshore corporate domicile and establishing these structures is uncomplicated, reliable and cost effective.
Process
Once the entitlement to register a vessel is satisfied the process for registration is straightforward. Generally, documents of ownership along with the relevant surveys are required. After all the required documents have been submitted, including the Carving and Marking Note, the Certificate of Registry is printed and issued immediately.
Finance
The BVI offers a secure and world accepted system of registering mortgages on vessels registered in the BVI. The registration system is designed to facilitate the recording of mortgages and to protect the priority of a lenderís security. The BVI Registry facilitates the entry, transfer and discharge of marine mortgages on registered vessels. Additionally, lenders may also submit a Notice of Mortgage Intent Form that protects the lenderís priority during the registration process.
Summary
Registration entitles the successful applicant to hold British Registry and fly the British Ensign. Registration in the BVI permits a reputable country to provide a record of your vessel for world wide use. A vessel that flies the British Ensign is entitled to physical protection by Great Britain and her Consulates world wide.
